Rocks and minerals teaching resources

Rocks and minerals resources help primary students investigate the solid Earth beneath their feet — exploring what rocks are made of, how they form and what they can tell us about the history of our planet.

The collection covers the three main types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic) and how they form, the properties used to identify and classify rocks and minerals (hardness, colour, texture, lustre), soil composition and how weathering and erosion shape landscapes over time, and the rock cycle. Resources include rock and mineral sorting activities, classification charts, hands-on observation tasks and diagram activities.

Works well with an actual rock sample collection for maximum engagement. Suitable for primary year levels.
