Reading comprehension teaching resources

Reading comprehension refers to the ability to understand, interpret and critically engage with written texts. In Australian classrooms, reading comprehension is a foundational literacy skill, enabling students to make meaning from a wide range of texts, including fiction, non-fiction, digital media and informational materials. It involves not only decoding words but also grasping the main ideas, identifying supporting details, making inferences, summarising content, and evaluating an author’s intent and perspective.

Developing strong reading comprehension skills is essential for student success across the curriculum. Effective comprehension allows students to access new information, follow instructions, participate in discussions, and complete research tasks. It supports learning in subjects such as English, Humanities, Science and more. The Australian Curriculum emphasises reading comprehension as a core component in the English learning area from Foundation through to Year 10.

Teachers use a variety of strategies to build reading comprehension, such as guided reading, reciprocal teaching, questioning techniques (literal, inferential, evaluative), think-alouds, text annotation, and vocabulary development. Reading comprehension resources may include lesson plans, worksheets, comprehension passages, assessment tools, and activities designed to foster students' understanding of texts at different levels of complexity. These resources can be adapted for whole-class instruction, small groups or individual learning needs, and are suitable for both primary and secondary settings.
